It was built between 379 and 386 at the behest of Bishop Ambrose himself, who dedicated it to the holy martyrs buried there (i.e. the holy martyrs Satiro, Vittore, Nabore, Vittore, Felice, Valeria, Gervasio and Protasio). The name of the church became 'Sant'Ambrogio' upon the death of the founding bishop. Major expansion works were ordered by Bishop Angilbert II, while the lantern was built in the 12th century.
