The French call the cereus cierge de lune, "altar candle of the moon", a literal translation of the Latin Selenicereus grandiflorus. Because its spectacular flower opens only after sunset and withers as the sun rises, Marie Antoinette is said to have summoned botanical artist Pierre-Joseph Redouté at midnight to immortalize the poignantly fleeting beauty of this New World cactus species. Cierge de Lune runs an exciting range, from crystalline high notes to a deep night rattle of spicy vanilla, with undertones of incense. Woodier and more amber than its Tahitian counterpart, with a hint of tawny leather, this vanilla forms the heart of the composition, revealing a darker side. A whiff of hedione transforms the delicious pod into a cactus flower, its pristine petals enriched with ylang-ylang.
