Aretusa is a character in Greek mythology, daughter of Nereus and Doris. The god Alpheus, son of the god Oceanus, fell in love with her while spying on her while she was bathing naked. Aretusa, however, fled from his attentions, escaping to the island of Ortigia, in Syracuse, dove the goddess Artemis transformed it into a spring.
