Founded in 1976 in Manosque, in the High Provence, by Olivier Baussan — then a twenty-three-year-old with a deep knowledge of the plants of Southern France — L'Occitane en Provence was born from a precise artisanal gesture: the distillation of rosemary essential oil, sold in local markets. From that act of botanical radicalism, the Maison has built a coherent identity around Provençal botanicals — lavender, almond, Corsican immortelle, shea butter from Burkina Faso — translating them into a range that encompasses fragrances, face, body, and hair treatments, as well as home collections. The very name, which evokes Occitania, a historical region of Southern France, declares its territorial belonging even before the bottle is opened.
