Among the multitudes of existing roses—small tea roses with a scent of musky, carnal spices, wanton and milky, whose charm is slightly distorted; satiny roses and pompom roses, withered or breathing out their final sigh—only two species are used in perfumery. Their essence is among the most precious: Rosa centifolia, or May rose, whose extract is used as a heart note, and Rosa Damascena, or Damask rose, prized for its fruity top notes.
