Mayan copal incense is the muse of Copal Azur, brought to life by perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour in 2014, also author of the first perfume of Aedes de Venustas, Signature. Incense is an olfactory thread that runs through much of the collection Aedes de Venustas. This thousand-year-old burnt offering to the gods is the origin of perfumery, as the word "perfume" itself comes from the Latin for fuma, which translates to "through smoke." Who better than Duchaufour could carry the incense from the church to the jungle of the sea? Very similar to frankincense, copal, whose name means "incense" in the Nahuatl language, can be extracted from a variety of trees native to Central and South America. Like incense in Ancient Egypt or Greece, it was burned by the Mayans and Aztecs to "feed" the gods. It is still used today in Mexico for spiritual purposes. Since copal resin cannot be used as an ingredient in a perfume, three different extractions of incense are used to evoke it from top to base notes, making up an extravagant 30% of the formula. The co-founder of Aedes de Venustas, Karl Bradl, was drawn to her scent as he pedaled along the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in the copal-soaked air towards the Sian Kaâ'an nature reserve, which translates as "Gateway to Paradise." Just as the Mayan citadel looms over the lush seaside paradise of Tulum, a steep incense mineral cliff dominates the olfactory landscape of Copal Azur. Ozonic and salty notes recall the Caribbean Sea and the local cenotes, the underground freshwater pools that dot the Yucatan peninsula. A flash of green recalls the lush Mexican jungles, cardamom peeks out in the humid and woody undergrowth of patchouli and myrrh, while a touch of almond-scented tonka bean and amber, for the Jaguar God of Earthly Fire, recall roundness of copal and the burning of its embers.
